I wish to do a project under a professor. What is the procedure?

You can do a summer project under a professor through the Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP). Projects will be floated by the end of the 2nd semester. You will be required to fill a form with your preference order for the projects. Interviews may or may not be conducted. Apart from that, you can approach a professor anytime by sending a mail and fixing up a time.

Minor:

What is a minor? How would pursuing a minor help me?

Minor is an additional credential a student will earn if he/she does minimum 30 credits worth of additional learning in a discipline other than his/her major discipline of B.Tech/DD/Int. M.Sc. degree.

Students aspirations on one hand and the demands of the work place on the other, have become highly diverse. Every student has specific abilities, interests and career goals. Employers too look for people with different combinations of competencies and flavors. A minor degree thus provides an opportunity for students to enhance their academic learning experience.

Who is eligible to pursue a minor?

The following students can register for minor courses every semester:

—B.Techs / Int. M.Sc : Any B.Tech/Int. M.Sc.: Student with Academic Standing – Category I, II and III.

DDs : Category I

Can I choose any courses in a dept. for a minor?

No. You will have to choose from the list of courses prescribed by the dept.

If I am a DD student, can I do a minor in my final year (9th and 10th semesters)?

Yes, a DD student is allowed to take up a minor course in the final year.

Can I take 2 minors?

Yes, if your faculty-advisor permits and if you can find the slots to do so. There is also provision of having 6 to 12 credits of minor as a project in some department.

How is the allotment done?

The allotment of minors (due to limited seats) is done on the basis of Core CPI after taking students’ preferences.

Does the Minor grade affect my SPI/CPI?

No. When you complete your minor, a Minor CPI will reflect on your transcript. Before that, the courses will be counted as additional learning.

If we opt for a minor, and also for a Branch Change into the same branch, and are allotted both, how can the problem be resolved?

Branch Change results are disclosed prior to dates of minor registration.

If I get an FR Grade in a minor course do I need to repeat the course? And will it reflect in my final transcript?

No, you do not need to repeat the course. However an ‘FR’ grade will reflect in the course will reflect under the additional courses done.

Honors:

What is an honor? Why should I do it?

For Btech students:

Honor is an additional credential a student will earn if he/she opts for the extra 24 credits needed for this in his/her own discipline. The concerned department specifies the course requirements for earning the Honors. An honor is exactly like a minor except that all honor courses are of the same dept.

Honor courses are either advanced level courses in your discipline, or are courses designed to give you more exposure to different areas of your discipline. On successful accumulation of credits at the end of the programme, this will be mentioned in the Degree Certificate as “Bachelor of Technology in xxx, with Honors.” The fact will also be reflected in the transcript, along with the list of courses, etc., taken.

Are Dual Degree students allowed to do pursue Honors?

DD students have to do Honors by default (but 30 credits unlike Btech students). They are considered as their core courses.

Does the Honors grade affect my CPI or is it just like the minor?

Just like minor, when you complete an honor, an Honor CPI will reflect in the final transcript. If have done some of the honor courses but not enough to acquire a honor degree, then those courses would be counted in Additional learning CPI. (for DDs, compulsory honors courses will affect their Core CPI)

Is an Honor beneficial even if one doesn’t want to do research or further study?

You want focused knowledge in your department to take a job in a certain specialized area, so that you can compete with, say, an M.Tech who has specialized in the same area You want to do a job in a field different from that which you are studying in your department, but which requires similar (for example, quantitative) skills. You might like to show extremely strong skills by completing an honor successfully, thereby differentiating yourself from a batchmate who has not done the honors.

Can I do both a minor and honor?

Yes, if your CPI > 8 (with no backlogs)

Can I choose any course in the dept. as an Honor course?

No. You will have to choose from a list of courses provided at the time of registration. EE Dept. offers the flexibility to choose relevant courses from other departments. But, prior permission from Fac-Ad is required.

What are the other types of tags and how are they different from each other?

Institute Elective – Courses other than that from your dept.

Open Elective – Courses from any dept. (including yours)

Dept. Elective –  Courses from your dept. (a list is there on ee website in your curriculum for the same).

Additional Learning Course – Courses from any dept. (including yours) Not counted in Core CPI

Audit – Courses from any dept. (including yours) Not counted in Core CPI (non-credit courses with only AU and NP grades)

Sit-Through – Courses from any dept. for which you do not register but attend classes due to interest with the permission of the instructor.

Is it compulsory to complete the various electives in the order specified in the curriculum?

No, the order specified in the curriculum is the recommended order to complete the courses so that you do not have to overload yourself with a lot of courses in subsequent semesters. But, you can choose to complete the electives in whichever order you wish.

Specialization Change:

When can BTech student change to Dual Degree? What is the procedure?

A BTech student can change into Dual Degree student from 5th semester onwards. You have to fill a form and get requisite signatures.

URA:

How is URA awarded and to whom?

URA is categorised into 3 on the basis of level of research.

URA01 : for preliminary research/ developmental experience. If the faculty member is satisfied with the quantum and quality of work done, at any stage, s/he may recommend the award of URA01 to the student. URA01 can be awarded only once to a student.

URA02 : for B. Tech. Level Research Project. Project and the quantum of work is substantially higher than what is expected, it may recommend that two more faculty members, other than those who have already participated in the committee for evaluation, duly chosen by the DUGC, examine the work done and evaluate whether a URA02 can be awarded to the student in addition to the AA grade already given. A joint recommendation must then be made by all: the original committee of evaluation and these two other faculty members that this student be awarded URA02, duly routed through the Convener, DUGC to the Convener, UGAPEC. This award, on approval by the UGAPEC, will be mentioned on the grade report of the student as URA02 carrying six credits and the grade AA.

URA03 : for Dual Degree Level Research Project. If the committee evaluating the Final Stage of the Dual Degree Project of a given Dual Degree student believes that the student has carried out truly exceptional work and the quantum of work is substantially higher than what is expected, it may recommend that two more faculty members, other than those who already participated in the committee for evaluation, duly chosen by the DUGC, examine the work done and evaluate whether a URA03 can be awarded to the student in addition to the AA grade already given. A joint recommendation must then be made by all: the original committee of evaluation and these two other faculty members that this student be awarded URA03, duly routed through the Convener, DUGC to the Convener, UGAPEC. This award, on approval by the UGAPEC, will be mentioned on the grade report of the student as URA03 carrying six credits and the grade AA.

Institute Medals:

How are Institute Medals given(on what basis)?

The sum of (i) CPI calculated for the basic requirement of the degree ( B.Tech component in the case of Dual degree) multiplied by 252, and (ii) CPI calculated for the best five additional courses ( of at least 6 credits each) done by the student multiplied by 30, will be considered when comparing student performance. In case of a tie, a student with honours will be preferred.

The President of India Medal / The Institute Gold Medal is awarded to the most outstanding student in the Undergraduate programme (B.Tech. / 5yr. Int. M.Sc. / Dual Degree), admitted through JEE. (Conditions and Procedures as approved by the Senate.)

The Institute Silver Medal is awarded to the most outstanding graduate in each branch of Engineering and Science other than the one(s) to whom the President of India Medal and the Institute Gold Medal are awarded.

BTP:

Is BTP compulsory?

There are two phases in BTP.

Phase-1 of 6 credits is compulsory. for a Btech student.

For Phase-2 of 12 credits one can either continue the project or do 2 department electives in place of it.

How are the projects allocated?

A list of projects is floated by the professor in charge of BTP, followed by preference filling by the students. The selection criteria is in the hands of professors.

Apart from this a student himself can approach a professor of his interest field.

Can a Dual Degree student do a BTP?

No, a dual degree is not allowed to do BTP.

SRE:

What is SRE?

SRE is basically an exposure to research to the dual degree students to help them in their DDP. A student has to do a research project (no specific guidelines on the project, this is entirely upto the advisor and student) under any faculty of the respective specialization for the duration of the semester

Who can do a SRE?

SRE is compulsory for a dual degree student. They (Microelectronics and CSP) have to do it in the 7th and 8th sem respectively.

Can a B-tech student do an SRE?

Generally the B-tech students are not allowed to do so. Although exceptions have been made in the past.

How are the projects allocated?

A list of projects is floated by the professor in charge of BTP, followed by preference filling by the students. The selection criteria is in the hands of professors.

Apart from this a student himself can approach a professor of his interest field.

Summer Intern/ Semester Exchange:

Are we (dual degree student) allowed to do internship during 4th year summers?

Ideally it is not allowed for a student to do intern during the summers of 4th year as their DDP get started in May. Although in special cases when the guide allows considering it to be beneficial for their project, he may be allowed.

Can we go for exchange of semester in 4th year?

One can go for semester exchange in 7th semester but a dual degree is not allowed to go for it in 8th semester as semesters in other universities generally get extended after May but 9th semester in IITB gets started in May itself.
